RPGaDAY 2026

#RPGaDAY2026

31 prompts for TTRPG writing in August.

1. Discipline
Share a character or fellow player who is a strong example of discipline.

Mage: The Ascension, where we have a highly trained fighter, a studious occultist, a dance expert, a self-taught naturalist... and my character is also there.

Also my favourite Vampire: The Masquerade Discipline is Protean. ;)

2. Stature
What does one character’s stature in their community mean to them?

This is a big deal in a game with lots of recurring NPCs. The Vampire games often do this. I don't often get to arrange a Goya exhibition like I did in New Bremen. The trick is not making it feel like a real job.

3. Poise
How does one character present themselves?

Tanith, Vampire: The Masquerade art-Goth Brujah
"The night is so lonely but what choice do I have?"

Didi, Mage: The Ascension Hollow One
"I am here to steal your boyfriend and/or credit cards."

4. Charm
An enjoyable moment of charm gone right or wrong?

Star Wars, engineer tagging along with the group at a fancy diplomatic party, accidentally catching the eye of the prince of the planet, relieved when an assassination attempt means she doesn't have to dance any more

5. Burden
What burden is a character willing to carry until the end?

Tanith in New Bremen had a day as a human after years as a vampire, and turned to trying to find a way back. But she also had Kindred she cared about and couldn't leave them. This made her even more tragically Goth than originally designed.

6. Reach
Who would you like to be able to share RPGs with?

Readers of other genres and bookish types, maybe story games are a better fit, or solo journaling but that's not social.

7. Mercy
A moment of mercy received or given?

Vampire: The Requiem for two players, a vampire and his mortal lover. When he realises another vampire has found out about her, he goes to speak with him rather than reacting with violence, knowing she would be horrified.

8. Resolve
A moment when a character kept or broke their resolve?

Vampire: The Masquerade - New Bremen, a vampire made human again for one day and seeking a way to turn back. but could never leave her few friends behind.

9. Privilege
Give one reason why it is a privilege to play with your group.

Getting to play Mage and get silly with it.

10. Secret
A secret you hope comes out about a character?

Just how many suitors our currently-in-the-1880s Mage ladies have between them.

11. Tact
A character made great by having or not having tact.

Didi Duvall, Hollow One Mage

Sometimes defeats monsters by mocking them

Concept: THE WORST

12. Loss
Most things end. What is one RPG loss you still feel?

The WoD MMO. I probably would have stayed in the "coffee shop" sections and avoided the PVP, but still. On which note I wish a new chat for V20 or V5 had happened - there was a New Bremen revival plan, but so it goes.

13. Strain
So far, what is the heaviest set of RPG things you have carried to play?

I was glad to get the first print-on-demand version of V20 that split it into two three hundred page books, one of which you didn't need after character creation.

14. Regard
What is a game held in high regard you have yet to play?

I haven't played anything Forged In The Dark, and nothing Powered By The Apocalypse since Apocalypse World. I'd probably have to GM them if I wanted to try.

15. Endurance
How would you organise an endurance session of your favourite game?

A marathon Vampire game (Masquerade or Requiem) maybe a big sweeping historical epic with jumps every era for players to come and go. Or go political, Anarchs actually get to smash the state. Or an emotional rollercoaster instead, a romance and all the ways it can complicate matters. (Obviously requires the most player buy-in.)

16. Composure
One thing that will cause a character to lose their composure?

Setites. Why did it have to Setites?

17. Intensity / Integrity
A satisfying example of a character’s integrity.

A vampire and a mortal in love, both of them willing to face down his fellow vampires, together or alone.

18. Directness
A fast introduction of a new PC or player?

A game that doesn't take forty minutes for an experience player to make a character would help. So would a new adventure, not part of a saga. Supers like ICONS are good here. For something like Vampire, a LARP or chat style "and tonight we're in Elysium..." default setup.

19. Desire
A huge risk taken because of desire?

Vampire: The Requiem - "You're The Only Thing Worth Dying For"

Two players as a vampire and a mortal.

He'd die for her. And he'd died once already so he knew how it felt.

20. Promise
Have the characters kept or broken more promises?

If they can make and keep a promise, my intention is that they will.

21. Charity
Share an RPG charity past or present that moved you.

Charity auctions at conventions which will raise thousands with lots like rare books, art, and sometimes a bag of chips, and in the case of LARP conventiins index cards allowing players to have powers that wouldn't normally get sanctioned.

22. Tough
An enjoyable moment of grit PCs did or did not tough out.

Nothing like playing a superhero who doesn't need to roll to ignore small arms fire.

23. Fortune
An enjoyable moment of good or bad fortune

Making a friend for life, in and out of game, by reading character descriptions in a chatroom and noticing one of the other PCs was a singer in a band my character might like.

24. Distance
Your preferred distance in any type of RPG conflict?

Either being the someone tough enough to wade in or being safely behind them.

25. Familiarity
One game you want to get more familiar with?

I'm curious about the Interview With The Vampire RPG. Because have you met me?

26. Regret
One game you regret not trying?

I haven't had a chance to do much of anything with Chronicles Of Darkness apart from mortals and Vampire: The Requiem, and some of them look really interesting.

27. Hunger
What do you hunger for most from a session?

BLOO- I mean chances to do something interesting and suited to the genre in question, be it heroic or horror or light or whatever.

28. Devotion
Game you have played the most!

It is a World... Of Darkness. The sin of Caine has spawned the cursed horror that stalks the night in search of living blood. The Kindred have long been a secret influence through all ages of human history, plotting against each other in a neverending Jyhad. Their immortal progeny are among us to this day, hidden from the eyes of humanity by an elaborate Masquerade.

I typed that from memory.

29. Labour
Thing you are most willing to work on for a game.

NPCs that I expect the PCs to interact with reasonably often. Memorable names, looks (with references) and ways of speaking, concerns, abilities, maybe even stats!

30. Pride
A game event that you are still proud of.

Setting up and running a two-player dark romance series.

J: much envy

31. Edge
Why does a character think they have an edge?

Sometimes... they have a magic sword.
